Cannabis 101: What are trichomes?

Depending on how good or bad your eyesight is, you may or may not be able to see the trichomes with your naked eye. When someone says…”that flower looks good and frosty,” the frost they are referring to are the visible trichomes.

So what are trichomes you ask? They are these little translucent little hair thingies that have a bulbous tip to them. They contain the goodies as far as the terpenes and potency is concerned. They give the bud the distinct frosty look that so many have. It is believed that the cannabis plant has these trichomes to fight off predatory herbivores. Since these trichomes have such a high concentration of THC, herbivores tend to eat some and then get “confused” and forget to eat the rest of the plant…no joke.

These little resin glands, as they are also referred as, carry the good stuff as I eluded to already. They house the terpenes (what gives the cannabis its smell, flavor and some effects) and cannabinoids. Both of these make up the type of experience you are about to have with any given strain.

So trichomes are very very important. You want to see them. You hope to see them.

Things that can effect the trichomes are heat, humidity, light etc. This is why it is very important that your dispensary knows how to package and store the flower. It’s also equally important that you know how to store your cannabis once you get it home. An airtight jar is best and you should try to keep it in a dry, cool and darker area of your home. As the buds dry out, the trichomes become the casualties.

So you want a great grower that knows how to harvest and cure their flower and a great dispensary that knows how to package and then you need to take great care of that all important bud to keep it fresh and sticky and tasty and most importantly…effective.

Hopefully this helps shed a little light on a term that you will start to hear quite frequently and as always my friends…stay “frosty.”
