To see how we got to this point, we need to take a journey back in time to the mid 80’s. That was back when I was introduced to cannabis. Back then you did not have the abundance of strains as we see now. Weed was smoked either in a joint, a pipe or a bong. Edibles such as a gummy or a chocolate bar did not exist. Vape was not yet a thing. And tinctures? What on earth was a tincture? The only thing you hoped you got when you went “shopping” for some weed was actual marijuana and not some baggie full of oregano. And if the weed you bought was mostly bud…score! Sellers of weed back then tended to sell you a bag of what we called “shake.” Nowadays…shake is what you will most likely discard once you have ground your last little bit of remaining flower (bud).
Those were the early days of pot becoming more accepted across demographics. Marijuana was no longer just for the hippy crowd. BUT…it was still widely illegal and hard to come by in a lot of places. So after my youthful experiences with it, I took a long hiatus from marijuana…until now…some 35 years later.
So here we are now. I am a 50 something man who is rediscovering marijuana all over again. My discovery started by chance. A friend of ours happened to join us one night for a tennis match and happened to bring along a little Tupperware bowl that contained 2 different edibles and a “Chong” pre-roll. That night I went home and ate one of the 5mg chocolate covered blueberries. After about 30 mins I was laughing and giggling uncontrollably. But most importantly, I slept like a baby that night and woke up refreshed and feeling good!
But here is the real kicker. For 30 some years I have suffered from a condition known as IBS or irritable bowel syndrome. For years I was taking everything under the sun to try to relieve the condition. Things I had tried included drinking baking soda before bed, taking charcoal pills, peppermint pills, prescription antacids, OTC antacids, probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins, CBD oils and you name it…I tried it. Nights were the worst. When you suffer from stress and IBS, bedtime is not something you look forward to because as your body tries to relax, the problem keeps going and even gets worse. My sleep patterns were awful and I had to always make sure I knew where the closest bathroom was at all times.
That one THC-laden blueberry not only made me euphoric and happy, it literally tamed IBS for the whole night. So I tried another edible. Same results; a great night’s sleep and general happiness and stress relief. So I then says to myself…”Self, something positive is happening here.”
Now fast forward over 18 months and here I am residing now in a State that allows for medical marijuana use. I am a legal card carrying medical marijuana user. Sleep has been awesome for the most part. My IBS is managed and I no longer live in fear of going out to eat and not knowing how the food will effect me. Life for me is now SO much better and I have weed, ganja, herb or whatever else you want to call it to thank for it.
So stick around, subscribe and come along with me on this journey as we review various strains as well as intake methods. Should be a fun ride.
